Dysfunction Junction

Hello ladies, long time no post! I created this illustration recently for Louisville Magazine. The art director requested I use my "sketchbook style" which she discovered via my newly redesigned website, www.catscott.com. I'm really glad she suggested it - I thought the grittiness and messiness of the line work really worked well with the story, which was about Louisville's Spaghetti Junction and what a mess it has become. I would love to hear what you guys think.

By the way - I adore the new banner!! And would love to see some more posting up in here!

here's the spread in the magazine with the art director's typesetting over my illo. It was kind of hard to just leave space when you don't really know what's going to happen there. Now that I see the final, I think I should have done a wash over the "reserved space" but I didn't know how that would interfere with her typography.

Detail of the drawing. I used a Hi-Tec C blue pen and then did washes over the drawing with Acrylic mixed with Gac 100.

Potential Alien Life Forms

I'm participating in a group show this June @ Grass Hut Gallery in Portland. The theme is 'Space & Time' so naturally I thought of aliens.

New 'Hand-Lettering' section on my website

As I really enjoy custom lettering projects (thanks for the invite, btw, to do a banner for this blog!) I congregated some of my past examples into a page on my site. One of my favorites, a personal piece from last summer, inspired by the cricket chorus which sang me to sleep nightly. (the excerpt is taken from a medeival latin bestiary)

Updates

Hi-

Its been awhile. Just wanted to post up a final drawing from one of the the children's books I'm working on. I'm about to start the final paintings. The other two books are progressing and I should have some solid drawings to post up soon. On a side note, my first book is going on sale next week, Ava Tree and The Wishes Three.

I'm very excited, and I hope you will check it out.

Best Wishes to all of you-

Sharing a little DIY love...

i've been enjoying others' DIY postings lately, so I wanted to offer one of my own (posted it on my blog & wanted to share here, too!)

I call it: "Mystery-Ink-Faux-Ancient-Manuscript-Handwriting"
Materials needed: pointy stick, lemon juice, toaster/toaster oven/electric stove burner, thin paper
Steps: dip your branch into the juice, write your script on the paper, let dry, hold over heat source of choice (try to judge a non-burnable distance) and watch your script slowly appear in darkening tones of brown. Experiment with different toasting times to get lighter/darker script & yellow to dark-brown hues. Fun! Easy!
(was trying different versions of 'Lenore' for an illustrative tribute to Poe's Raven)
